Massaya’ story is intertwined with modern Lebanese history. Their story begins with the Ghosn family abandoning their property in the Beqaa Valley at the outbreak of civil war; however, the Ghosn brothers, Sami and Ramzi ultimately returned in the early 1990s to establish Massaya as an arak prooducer first and later as a winery.

CHAMPAGNE BRICE WINE DINNER

THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY SOLD OUT.

CALL US IF YOU’D LIKE TO BE ADDED TO OUR WAITLIST.

We are so excited to present our very first sparkling wine dinner that features CHAMPAGNE! We will be basking in the bubbly beauty of grower champagne producer, Champagne Brice! The Brice family has lived in the village of Bouzy since the 17th century. Three generations ago, they were focused exclusively on red wine production, shifting to Champagne just after WWII. In 1994, Jean-Paul Brice founded Champagne Brice and ten years later Jean-Paul’s sons Jean-René and Remi took the reins, with consulting oenologist and viticulturist Christophe Constant, formerly of J.-L. Vergnon and Paul Bara.

Brice owns twelve hectares of vines, eight of which are in the prime mid-slopes of the Grand Cru village of Bouzy - mostly Pinot Noir with one hectare of Chardonnay. These eight hectares are divided into only 16 plots, making them quite large by Champagne standards. The remaining estate vineyards are in Chigny-lès-Roses (1.5 hectares of Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier) and Loches-sur-Ource in the Aube (2.5 hectares of Pinot Noir). All vineyards are farmed organically, and the house style eschews malolactic fermentation entirely.

CELLER PARDAS WINE DINNER

CATALONIAN PRODUCER FOCUSING ON INDIGENOUS GRAPES

Celler Pardas is part of the new generation of producers in Catalonia focusing on their terroirs and indigenous grapes such as Xarello, Macabeo and Sumoll. The project began in 1996 when local winegrowers Ramon Parera and Jordi Arnan bought the Can Comas estate in Alt Penedes. The medieval farmhouse was surrounded by 60 hectares of forest, pasture and scrub land cut through by the Bitlles River. They cleared some areas and started palnting cuttings shortly after. Their vineyards are scattered across three main sites with varied soil profiles, ranging from rocky clay and limestone terraces to deep alluvial soils. Their focus is preserving the balance and health of their land. They farm organically without irrigation and aim to work in partnership with nature.

VEGETARIAN WINE DINNER featuring 9 IS ENOUGH

VEGETARIAN WINE DINNER featuring 9 IS ENOUGH

VEGETARIAN MENU AND WINES FROM A TRAILBLAZING NATURAL WOMAN WINEMAKER IN PUGLIA, ITALY

Once a year, we host a vegetarian wine dinner, usually in early summer, so we can celebrate the bounty of our local, midwestern produce. We like to select wines that are vegan, but also may tell a greater…more natural story. This year, we are pairing our vegetarian wine dinner with the wine of 9 Is Enough.

Valentina Passalacqua is a trailblazing young natural winemaker in Puglia, a region not exactly known for biodynamic, no sulfur wines.  She took over her family’s land (used only for cattle grazing since 1900), located inside Gargano National Park, to create a diverse farm that includes indigenous grape varietals.  Her family considered the land too difficult, too poor, for crops, not realizing that they were actually sitting on a precious marble mine – or soil that happens to be amazing for vines.  The rocky, mineral-rich soil does not retain water (also great for vines), and proximity to the sea means cooling breezes and ventilation (another plus).  Valentina’s wines are pure, elegant, never soupy as you sometimes see in wines from Puglia (it’s hot there). Because, she is careful about canopy management (to ensure grapes don’t get cooked) and picks early to retain freshness and acidity. Finally, you’ll see that 9 Is Enough gets it’s name from the fact that all 3 wines come in at 9% ABV, making them the perfect, fresh, elegant summer sippers.

PRIDE 2O23 T-SHIRTS

100% OF PROCEEDS DONATED TO BRAVE SPACE ALLIANCE

We have teamed up with our neighborhood besties over at RepChi (4425 N. Milwaukee Ave.) to design and produce a limited edition t-shirt to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community this Pride 2023. 100% of proceeds will be donated to Brave Space Alliance.

Brave Space Alliance is the first black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ center located on the south side of Chicago, and designed to create and provide affirming and culturally competent services for the entire LGBTQ+ community of Chicago. Brave Space Alliance was created to fill a gap in the organizing of and services to trans and gender-nonconforming people. Currently, very few LGBTQ social services or advocacy networks exist on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Furthermore, the few trans-specific resources in the city are located in majority-white neighborhoods on the North Side, which are inaccessible geographically, and also regularly result in the hyper-policing of trans people of color who attempt to access them.

You may also visit their website to donate directly or learn more about the work that Brave Space Alliance does. Visit them at https://bravespacealliance.org/.

T-SHIRTS ARE AVAILABLE NOW! You may stop by during regular business hours to buy a shirt. We open at 5pm, but we are closed on Mondays. Feel free to call ahead to confirm we have the size/s you want. (773)283-6080.

T-SHIRTS ARE $23 EACH (tax additional)

The shirts are BELLA/CANVAS brand and available in S - XL. We love this brand of t-shirts. It’s what we have always used for our Community uniform shirts. They are soft and hold up very well over time.

HOBO WINE COMPANY WINE DINNER

HOBO WINE COMPANY WINE DINNER

brainchild of Kenny Likitprakong BASED IN SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA

Kenny found his first winemaking job in the Santa Cruz mountains in 1999 before starting Hobo Wine Company in 2002. The “Hobo” name refers to Kenny’s winemaking experiences traveling and working place to place. It applies now to the fact that Kenny does not own his own vineyards, but sources fruit from vineyard owners who he has longstanding relationships with around California, some of which he worked with before starting Hobo.

The Hobo winery has been based in Santa Rosa since 2013. You can look at a map and see the spread of his 42 vineyards: 240 miles between his most southerly parcels in Arroyo Seco and his most northerly vineyards in Redwood Valley.  His vineyards go as far east as Clarksburg, near Sacramento, over 60 miles from his winery in Santa Rosa.  Kenny has cultivated relationships with 27 different farmers across 14 or more AVAs. Nearly all of the vineyards they lease are organically farmed and 88% of the total vineyards that they source from are sustainably, organically, or biodyamically farmed. The winery itself is Certified Organic which will be represented on the labels beginning with the 2021 vintage.

Kenny’s wines are accessibly priced, especially for California. The labels are eye-catching and without capsules, helping to eliminate waste. The winery is committed to sustainable packaging including a high percentage of recycled glass (all domestic) and natural corks. On the back of his labels, it is noted that he is a member of 1% for the Planet, an organization started by the founders of Patagonia to facilitate donations to green organizations. He donates 1% of his gross sales to non-profits.

LAGAR DE DAREI WINE DINNER

A THIRD GENERATION ESTATE OF THE RUIVO FAMILY

Lagar de Darei is a gorgeous 150-hectare property nestled in the Dao Valley in central Portugal, in the municipality of Mangualde. A dedicated natural reserve comprises the vast majority of the area with beautiful forests that line the Dao River, verdant farmland for cattle, apple orchards, and 6.8 hectaes of organic-certified grape vines. Darei is the name of the town that the winery sits in, with a population of only 40 people. At the moment, the total production for the estate is just 45,000 bottles annually focused on the local and indigenous white and red varieties. As a result of the winemaker’s sincere focus on traditionally made wines using old cement lagares and beautiful old presses, the wines are clear, focused and speak to the terroir of the area. Guanito (bat guano) is all the fertilizer they need on their serradela, white clover and strawberry clover covered ground to encourage the healthy growth of their native white and red varieties. Striving to only show the natural terroir of their small region, Lagar de Darei is all about the tradition of the area and not the fashion of the wine world.

TUTTI FRUTTI ANANAS WINE DINNER

6:30 PM18:30

TUTTI FRUTTI ANANAS WINE DINNER

Tutti Frutti Ananas is a collaborative project between three vignerons in Collioure and Banyuls, France.

Tutti Frutti Ananas is a collaboration that sees Manuel of Vinyer de la Ruca team up with friends Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades and Joachim Roque of Domaine Carterole to make the kind of wines they like drinking by the Mediterranean down in Banyuls-sur-Mer.

The guys farm organically over a combination of sand, schist and quartz from vineyards both close to the sea and up in the mountains that loom above. They make the wines together in Les 9 Caves, a cooperative cellar they share in an old garage in the town’s centre. The wines ferment and age in large concrete vats and are bottled young, brimming with life.

Under their own labels, they each farm old bush vines planted on steep slopes over pure schist. In this arid climate, yields are painfully low and the resulting wines are powerful and intense, often requiring careful ageing to show their true pedigree. The idea here is to do something a little different and as the name suggests the wines are vibrant, easygoing and most importantly, incredibly delicious.

CRUSE WINE COMPANY WINE DINNER

CRUSE WINE COMPANY WINE DINNER

A small winery in Petaluma dedicated to making uniquely Californian wine for your table.

Often with bubbles.

Michael Cruse was born and raised in Northern California and prides himself on producing wines that are unabashedly Californian and inherently delicious. Michael came to the wine business through his love of science. His moment of enlightenment was attending a lecture at Cal Berkeley by none other than Terry Leighton of Kalin Cellars! After several years of gaining experience by working for other wineries, Michael felt the pull to strike out on his own and to create wines that reflected his vision and admiration for California. Michael set forth with a few partners to set up shop in an industrial warehouse in Petaluma where he built a custom crush facility and launched his Champagne inspired sparkling wine project, Ultramarine, in 2008. Michael followed-up Ultramarine with the creation of Cruse Wine Co. in 2013. The one thing he didn’t want to do was to create another Pinot Noir or Cabernet, instead he found inspiration in varieties such as Valdiguie, Tannant, Carignan and St Laurent. The flagship wine of Cruse Wine Co. is the red blend Monkey Jacket (the name inspired by an old, British sailor song). This wine is the epitome of what Cruse Wine Co. is meant to be, as it’s a blend of Validiguie, Carignan, Tanant, St Laurent and mixed field blend reds and provides incredible drinkability with brightness and ample structure.

ARMENIAN WINE DINNER

TWO WINERIES FROM ONE FAMILY

Keush winery was created by Vahe Keushguerian with a desire to create a product that married extreme high elevation farming and un-grafted ancient varietals. The vineyards are planted on rich volcanic soil. It is an opus with a 6000 year origin. The vineyards are positioned 500 metres from the Armenian/Azeri border and at 1800 meters are the highest in the country and among the highest in the world. Keush is a pioneer in making a Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine from indigenous Armenian grape varietals. We are unexpectedly pairing that very sparkler with our dessert course this dinner. Zulal wines was founded by Aimee Keushguerian in 2017, introducing Zulal Areni Reserve 2015 and Zulal Voskehat 2017. Aimee is the daughter to Keush founder, Vahe Kushguerian. Zulal means pure in Armenian. These wines are intended to express the purest characteristics of Armenian autochthonous grape varieties. Among the highest vineyard sites, extreme climate and volcanic soils give these wines their distinctive character.
